Carlota Ribas-López

Carlota Ribas-López is a native of Spain who moved to the United States in 1999. Born into a bilingual household, her passion for foreign languages started very early, in elementary school, when she began taking English lessons. In high school she studied French and in college she also took courses in Russian and German.

She attended the Autonomous University of Barcelona where she earned a degree in Translation and Interpretation (English, French, and Russian into Spanish) with a specialization in conference interpreting and medical translation. While at the Autonomous University she took a year off to study at the Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA, where she obtained a BA with a focus on Slavic Studies, Russian, and French.

While working at Accurapid as a translator and editor, she realized she wanted to further her knowledge of translation. Thus she completed a postgraduate program of specialization in English-to-Spanish Translation at UNED in Madrid, Spain. She is currently pursuing a PhD as part of the doctoral program in Translation and Intercultural Studies at Rovira i Virgili university in Tarragona, Spain. Her research interest is translation technology, focusing on the interaction between human translators and computer-assisted translation systems.

Carlota is a member of the American Translators Association (ATA) and belongs to both the Spanish and the Medical divisions. She is an ATA-certified translator for the language combination English into Spanish.
